Cooperative Society
A cooperative society is a member-owned organisation where people voluntarily come together to meet shared economic needs — like credit, buying, selling, or services — and run it democratically on a one-member-one-vote basis, sharing the benefits among themselves rather than with outside shareholders.
It is a "by the members, for the members" business. The same people who use the society also own and control it, and any surplus comes back to them.
A cooperative is a self-help group with legal status: jointly owned, democratically controlled (one member, one vote), and operated for members' mutual benefit, not external profit.
It is the foundational identity of every SahakarLekha user. Understanding "what a society is" frames why its accounting, audit, and governance differ from a private company.
