Cooperative Principles
Cooperative principles are the universally recognised guidelines by which cooperatives put their values into practice — including voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, member economic participation, autonomy, education, cooperation among cooperatives, and concern for community.
They are the "rules of the game" that make a cooperative a cooperative — open to all, run democratically, and working for members and the wider community.
A small, internationally accepted set of principles (voluntary membership, democratic control, member participation, autonomy, education/training, cooperation among cooperatives, community concern) that translate cooperative values into everyday practice.
These principles explain why societies are governed and accounted for differently — e.g. democratic control shapes AGMs and elections; member participation shapes share capital and patronage.
